Swahili-Bibel.

Swahili Bible.

Swahili is an East-African language spoken by almost seven countries but mainly in two countries of Africa that is Tanzania and Kenya. The bible has been on translation over the years, from its origin the Hebrew language going all over other continents languages. The Swahili bible has a fascinating history of how it came to be. This year (2023) in Germany there is a celebration of 501 years jubilee of bible translation, what makes it interesting is, it was a Germany missionary who translated the bible to Swahili language, his name was Johann Ludwig Krapf. Though his missionary mission aimed him to do his service in Ethiopia, his passion of exploring took him to Kenya and further to Zanzibar, and later interior of Tanganyika land, with the company of his fellow explorer Johannes Rebmann, they became the first Europians to see the snowcapped mountains of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Dr.Krapf passion of learning new languages is the one that enabled him to translate the bible to Swahili language, he didn’t actually translate the whole bible but some parts of it and laid foundation for the translation of the bible to Swahili language. Later Bishop Edward Steere and a British missionary Francis Roger Hodgson, carried on with this task with the assistance of British and Foreign Bible society group. They accomplished the translation of new testament in 1882, and old testament in 1884 with the help of Francis` wife too, and in 1890 is when British and Foreign Bible society published the old testament. In total of age the Swahili bible has 132 years, that is over a century. In Tanzania, Swahili is the national language that unites all the people in the country but within the country there are more than 120 tribes and each tribe has its own mother tongue. Swahili bible has made it easy to unite Tanzanian Christians and spread the gospel using the common language meanwhile, there have been translations of Swahili bible into the tribal languages, this is also very good as it is then a very unique way to conserve the culture of different tribes. Just as any language Swahili has dialects and for so many years there had been reformation on the translation to give it a better dialect that is easier and understandable to the people. Different Swahili bible version have been produced but the most common are the Neno and TKU (Tafsiri ya kusoma kwa-urahisi), there are also other two famous version that are SUV (Swahili Union Version) and Habari njema. As a pride fact to add, there is a special fact in the Tanzanian land, as we have our dear brothers and sisters all over the world with hearing or speaking or vision disabilities, they also need to know about God, Tanzania is actually the first country all over the world to have the full bible in braille written style and this was a project being on run for many years and finally complete in 2021. The bible translation has been of good advantage to people, just like the goal of Martin Luther he aimed to make bible accessible to all people. That is how it has blessed the Christians of East Africa, the bible being written in their own language has enlighten even more, their relationship with God, but also since they can read it in their own language it brings even better effect into their hearts. There is a very special saying by the late independence leader of south Africa, Nelson Mandela “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart” (Brainy Quote). The bible translation is not the route to know only about religion but the route to know about God.
